Boron trioxide Powder is one of the oxides of boron. It is a white, glassy solid with the formula B2O3.
It is almost always found as the vitreous (amorphous) form; however, it can be crystallized after extensive annealing (that is, under prolonged heat).
Glassy boron oxide (g-B2O3) is thought to be composed of boroxol rings which are six-membered rings composed of alternating 3-coordinate boron and 2-coordinate oxygen.
Because of the difficulty of building disordered models at the correct density with many boroxol rings, this view was initially controversial, but such models have recently been constructed and exhibit properties in excellent agreement with the experiment.
It is now recognized, from experimental and theoretical studies, that the fraction of boron atoms belonging to boroxol rings in glassy B2O3 is somewhere between 0.73 and 0.83, with 0.75 correspondings to a 1:1 ratio between the ring and non-ring units.
The number of boroxol rings decays in the liquid state with increasing temperature.
The crystalline form (α-B2O3) (see structure in the infobox) is exclusively composed of BO3 triangles. This trigonal, quartz-like network undergoes a coesite-like transformation to monoclinic β-B2O3 at several gigapascals (9.5 GPa).
Boron trioxide is produced by treating borax with sulfuric acid in a fusion furnace.
At temperatures above 750 °C, the molten boron oxide layer separates from sodium sulfate. It is then decanted, cooled, and obtained in 96–97% purity.
Another method is heating boric acid above ~300 °C. Boric acid will initially decompose into steam, (H2O(g)) and metaboric acid (HBO2) at around 170 °C and further heating above 300 °C will produce more steam and diboron trioxide. The reactions are:
H3BO3 → HBO2 + H2O
2 HBO2 → B2O3 + H2O
Boric acid goes to anhydrous microcrystalline B2O3 in a heated fluidized bed. A carefully controlled heating rate avoids gumming as water evolves.
Molten boron oxide attacks silicates. Internally graphitized tubes via acetylene thermal decomposition are passivated.
Crystallization of molten α-B2O3 at ambient pressure is strongly kinetically disfavored (compare liquid and crystal densities).
The threshold conditions for the crystallization of the amorphous solid are 10 kbar and ~200 °C.
Its proposed crystal structure in enantiomorphic space groups has been revised to enantiomorphic space groups P3121(#152); P3221(#154) (e.g., α-quartz).
Boron oxide will also form when diborane (B2H6) reacts with oxygen in the air or trace amounts of moisture.

Calcium hexaboride (sometimes calcium boride) is a compound of calcium and boron with the chemical formula CaB6.
It is an important material due to its high electrical conductivity, hardness, chemical stability, and melting point.
It is a black, lustrous, chemically inert powder with a low density.
It has the cubic structure typical for metal hexaborides, with octahedral units of 6 boron atoms which are a remarkable fact because calcium and boron are neither magnetic nor have inner 3d or 4f electronic shells, which are usually required for ferromagnetism.
It has been investigated in the past due to a variety of peculiar physical properties, such as superconductivity, valence fluctuation, and Kondo effects.
However, the most remarkable property of CaB is its ferromagnetism. It occurs at unexpectedly high temperatures and with a low magnetic moment.
The origin of this high-temperature ferromagnetism is the ferromagnetic phase of the dilute electron gas, linkage to the presumed excitonic state in calcium boride, or external impurities on the surface of the sample.
The impurities might include iron and nickel, probably coming from impurities in the boron used to prepare the sample.
CaB6 is insoluble in H2O, MeOH (methanol), and EtOH (ethanol) and dissolves slowly in acids.
Its microhardness is 27 GPa, Knoop hardness is 2600 kg/mm2), the Young modulus is 379 GPa, and electrical resistivity is greater than 2·1010 Ω·m for pure crystals.
CaB6 is a semiconductor with an energy gap estimated at 1.0 eV. The low, semi-metallic conductivity of many CaB6 samples can be explained by unintentional doping due to impurities and possible non-stoichiometry

Epitaxially grown thin-film crystalline aluminum nitride is used for surface acoustic wave sensors (SAWs) deposited on silicon wafers because of AlN's piezoelectric properties.
One application is an RF filter that is widely used in mobile phones, which is called a thin film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR).
This is a MEMS device that uses aluminum nitride sandwiched between two metal layers. AlN is also used to build piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers, which emit and receive an ultrasound, and which can be used for in-air range finding over distances of up to a meter. Metallization methods are available to allow AlN to be used in electronics applications similar to those of alumina and beryllium oxide.
AlN nanotubes as inorganic quasi-one-dimensional nanotubes, which are isoelectronic with carbon nanotubes, have been suggested as chemical sensors for toxic gases.
Currently, there is much research into developing light-emitting diodes to operate in the ultraviolet using gallium nitride-based semiconductors and, using the alloy aluminum gallium nitride, wavelengths as short as 250 nm have been achieved.
In 2006, an inefficient AlN LED emission at 210 nm was reported.

Chromium Carbide Cr3C2 Powder APPLICATION FIELDS
Chromium Carbide Cr3C2 Powder is a ceramic compound that exists in several different chemical compositions: Cr3C2, Cr7C3, and Cr23C6. At standard conditions, it exists as a gray solid. It is extremely hard and corrosion-resistant. It is also a refractory compound, which means that it retains its strength at high temperatures as well. These properties make use as an additive to metal alloys. When chromium carbide crystals are integrated into the surface of a metal it improves the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the metal and maintains these properties at elevated temperatures. Cr3C2 powder is mixed with solid nickel-chromium. This mixture is then heated to very high temperatures and sprayed onto the object being coated where it forms a protective layer. This layer is essentially its own metal matrix composite, consisting of hard ceramic Cr3C2 particles embedded in a nickel-chromium matrix. Cr3C2 prevents large grains from forming in the composite, which results in a fine-grained structure of superior toughness.Chromium Carbide Cr3C2 Application:

Cobalt is a chemical element with the symbol Co and atomic number. Like nickel, cobalt is found in the Earth's crust only in chemically combined form, save for small deposits found in alloys of natural meteoric iron.
The free element, produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver-gray metal. Cobalt-based blue pigments (cobalt blue) have been used since ancient times for jewelry and paints, and to impart a distinctive blue tint to glass, but the color was later thought to be due to the known metal bismuth.
Miners had long used the name for some of the blue-pigment-producing minerals; they were so named because they were poor in known metals, and gave poisonous arsenic-containing fumes when smelted. In 1735, such ores were found to be reducible to a new metal (the first discovered since ancient times), and this was ultimately named for the kobold.
Today, some cobalt is produced specifically from one of a number of metallic-lustered ores, such as cobaltite (CoAsS). The element is, however, more usually produced as a by-product of copper and nickel mining.
The copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia yields most of the global cobalt production.
World production in 2016 was 116,000 tonnes (according to Natural Resources Canada), and the DRC alone accounted for more than 50%. Cobalt is primarily used in lithium-ion batteries, and in the manufacture of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys.
The compounds cobalt silicate and cobalt(II) aluminate (CoAl2O4, cobalt blue) give a distinctive deep blue color to glass, ceramics, inks, paints, and varnishes. Cobalt occurs naturally as only one stable isotope, cobalt-59. Cobalt-60 is a commercially important radioisotope, used as a radioactive tracer and for the production of high-energy gamma rays.

It is one of several binary compounds of copper and sulfur see copper sulfide for an overview of this subject and has attracted interest because of its potential uses in catalysis and photovoltaics Copper sulfide crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system, and this is the form of the mineral covellite.
There is also an amorphous high-pressure form which based on the Raman spectrum has been described as having a distorted covellite structure. An amorphous room temperature semiconducting form produced by the reaction of an ethylenediamine complex with thiourea has been reported, which transforms into the crystalline covellite form at 30 °C.
The crystal structure of covellite has been reported several times, and whilst these studies are in general agreement on assigning the space group P63/mmc there are small discrepancies in bond lengths and angles between them.
The structure was described as "extraordinary" by Wells and is quite different from copper oxide, but similar to CuSe (klockmannite). The covellite unit cell contains 6 formula units 12 atoms.

TiC particles are uniformly dispersed in the matrix of lath martensite and retained austenite with particle sizes in the range of 3–5 μm. Fe-based hardfacing coating reinforced by TiC particles is found to possess better wear resistance and a lower coefficient of friction than that of the AISI 1045 steel substrate.

The bandgap is tuned by varying the composition(x) in the material. SnTe can be alloyed with Pb (or PbTe with Sn) to tune the bandgap from (SnTe).
