DESCRIPTION

Osmium exists in osmiridium ore. The solid containing osmium was roasted in air, and the volatile osmium tetroxide was absorbed by alkyl alkali solution. It can be used to make alloy with super high hardness. An alloy of osmium with rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, or platinum, commonly used as a bearing in record players, fountain pens, clocks, and instruments.

Purpose

Osmium can be used as catalyst in industry. Using osmium as catalyst for ammonia synthesis or hydrogenation can obtain high conversion rate at low temperature. If the platinum mixed with a little osmium, it can be made into a large hardness and sharp osmium platinum alloy scalpel.
