Pristine and smooth pure iron surfaces are mirror-like silvery-gray. However, iron reacts readily with oxygen and water to give brown to black hydrated iron oxides, commonly known as rust. Unlike the oxides of some other metals, that form passivating layers, rust occupies more volume than the metal and thus flakes off, exposing fresh surfaces for corrosion.

The body of an adult human contains about 4 grams (0.005% body weight) of iron, mostly in hemoglobin and myoglobin. These two proteins play essential roles in vertebrate metabolism, respectively oxygen transport by blood and oxygen storage in muscles. To maintain the necessary levels, human iron metabolism requires a minimum of iron in the diet. Lanthanum Carbonate Description

Lanthanum Carbonate is a chemical element with the symbol La and atomic number 57. It is a soft, ductile, silvery-white metal that tarnishes slowly when exposed to air and is soft enough to be cut with a knife.

It is the eponym of the lanthanide series, a group of 15 similar elements between lanthanum and lutetium in the periodic table, of which lanthanum is the first and the prototype.

It is also sometimes considered the first element of the 6th-period transition metals, which would put it in a group, although lutetium is sometimes placed in this position instead.

Lanthanum is traditionally counted among the rare earth elements. Lanthanum has no biological role in humans but is essential to some bacteria.

It is not particularly toxic to humans but does show some antimicrobial activity.

Lanthanum usually occurs together with cerium and the other rare earth elements. Meaning "to lie hidden". Although it is classified as a rare earth element, lanthanum is the 28th most abundant element in the Earth's crust, almost three times as abundant as lead. In minerals such as monazite and bastnäsite.

Lanthanum chloride heptahydrate Description :

It is applied as a scintillator material. In organic synthesis, lanthanum trichloride functions as a mild Lewis acid.

This compound is used in gamma detectors. Lanthanum fluoride is insoluble in water and can be used as a test for the presence.

The heavier halides are all very soluble compounds. The anhydrous halides are produced by direct reaction of their elements, as heating the hydrates cause hydrolysis: for example, heating hydrated LaCl3 produces LaOCl.

Lanthanum reacts exothermically with hydrogen to produce the dihydride LaH2, a black, brittle, conducting compound with the structure. 

This is a non-stoichiometric compound, and further absorption of hydrogen is possible, with a concomitant loss of electrical conductivity, until the more salt-like LaH3 is reached. Like LaI2 and LaI, LaH2 is probably an electrode compound.

Due to the large ionic radius and great electropositivity, there is not much covalent contribution to its bonding and hence it has limited, like yttrium and the other lanthanides. 

Lanthanum oxalate does not dissolve very much in alkali-metal oxalate solutions, and [La(acac)3(H2O)2] decomposes around 500 °C.

Oxygen is the most common in lanthanum complexes, which are mostly ionic and often have high coordination.

These high-coordinate species, reaching up to coordination number 12 with the use such as in La2(SO4)3·9H2O, often have a low degree of symmetry because of stereochemical factors

Lanthanum Di-Molybdate Description

Molybdates are compounds containing molybdenum oxyanions in which molybdenum has the formal oxidation number of +6, but in general usage the term is often extended to cover any compound containing molybdenum and oxygen. Confusingly, the word “molybdate” is also part of the name of a number of compounds which contain molybdenum as part of non-oxygen-containing polyatomic ions, such as ammonium tetrathiomolybdate, in which molybdenum is bonded to four sulfur atoms. Molybdates are most often used as catalysts in petroleum refining, polymer production, and other industrial chemical processes. Additionally, sodium molybdate can be used as a corrosion inhibitor in industrial water treatment, and molybdate salts are added to some types of fertilizers, due to the requirement of molybdenum for the function of nitrogen fixation enzymes in legumes. Some molybdates are brightly colored, and have been used as specialty pigments and in colorimetric chemical tests.

Although of little commercial value, PbS is one of the oldest and most common detection element materials in various infrared detectors.

As an infrared detector, PbS functions as a photon detector, responding directly to the photons of radiation, as opposed to thermal detectors, which respond to a change in detector element temperature caused by the radiation.

Lead Sulfide Powder used to measure radiation in either of two ways: by measuring the tiny photocurrent the photons cause when they hit the PbS material, or by measuring the change in the material's electrical resistance that the photons cause. Lead Sulfide Powder Measuring the resistance change is the more commonly used method.

At room temperature, PbS is sensitive to radiation at wavelengths between approximately 1 and 2.5 μm. This range corresponds to the shorter wavelengths in the infra-red portion of the spectrum,

The so-called short-wavelength infrared (SWIR). Only very hot objects emit radiation in these wavelengths.

Cooling the PbS elements, for example, using liquid nitrogen or a Peltier element system,

shifts its sensitivity range to between approximately 2 and 4 μm. Objects that emit radiation in these wavelengths still have to be quite hot several hundred degrees Celsius but not as hot as those detectable by uncooled sensors.

Other compounds used for this purpose include indium antimonide (InSb) and mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe), which have somewhat better properties for detecting the longer IR wavelengths.)

Lead tin telluride is a ternary alloy of lead, tin, and tellurium, generally made by alloying either tin into lead telluride or lead into tin telluride. It is a narrow bandgap semiconductor material.

The bandgap is tuned by varying the composition(x) in the material. SnTe can be alloyed with Pb (or PbTe with Sn) to tune the bandgap from (SnTe). Lead Telluride Powder important to note that unlike chalcogenides, e.g. cadmium, mercury, and zinc chalcogenides, the bandgap in Te does not change linearly between the two extremes. In contrast, as the composition (x) is increased, the bandgap decreases approach zero in the concentration regime (0.32–0.65 corresponding to temperature 4-300 K, respectively) and further increases towards the bulk bandgap of SnTe. Therefore, the lead-tin telluride alloys have narrower band gaps than their endpoint counterparts making lead tin telluride an ideal candidate for mid-infrared, 3–14 μm optoelectronic application.

Therefore, temperature stability has to be maintained while working with lead-tin telluride based laser. Lead is a Block P, Group 14, Period 6 element with an atomic radius of 207.2. The number of electrons in each of Lead's shells is [2, 8, 18, 32, 18, 4] and its electron configuration is [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p2. The lead atom has a radius of 175 pm and a Van der Waals radius of 202 pm.

In its elemental form, lead has a metallic gray appearance. Lead occurs naturally as a mixture of four stable isotopes: 204Pb (1.48%), 206Pb (23.6%), 207Pb (22.6%), and 208Pb (52.3%). Lead is obtained mainly from galena (PbS) by a roasting process. Anglesite, cerussite, and minim are other common lead containing minerals.

Lead does occur as a free element in nature, but it is rare. It is a dense, soft metal that is very resistant to corrosion and poorly conductive compared to other metals. Its density and low melting point make it useful in applications such as electrolysis and industrial materials.

Tin is a Block P, Group 14, Period 5 element with an atomic weight of 118.710. The number of electrons in each of tin's shells is 2, 8, 18, 18, 4 and its electron configuration is [Kr] 4d10 5s2 5p2. The tin atom has a radius of 140.5 pm and a Van der Waals radius of 217 pm.

In its elemental form, tin has a silvery-gray metallic appearance. It is malleable, ductile and highly crystalline. Tin has nine stable isotopes and 18 unstable isotopes. Under 3.72 degrees Kelvin, Tin becomes a superconductor. Applications for tin include soldering, plating, and such alloys as pewter.

The first uses of tin can be dated to the Bronze Age around 3000 BC in which tin and copper were combined to make the alloy bronze. The origin of the word tin comes from the Latin word Stannum which translates to the Anglo-Saxon word tin.

Lithium Cobalt Oxide Description

The solid consists of layers of monovalent lithium cations that lie between extended anionic sheets of cobalt and oxygen atoms, arranged as edge-sharing octahedra, with two faces parallel to the sheet plane.

Lithium Cobalt Oxide is formally in the trivalent oxidation state. In each layer (cobalt, oxygen, or lithium), Lithium Cobalt Oxide Powder is arranged in a regular triangular lattice.

The lattices are offset so that the lithium atoms are farthest from the cobalt atoms, and the structure repeats in the direction perpendicular to the planes every three cobalt (or lithium) layers. signifying a unit cell with threefold improper rotational symmetry and a mirror plane.

The threefold rotational axis (which is normal to the layers) is termed improper because the triangles of oxygen (being on opposite sides of each octahedron) aligned. Batteries produced with Lithium Cobalt Oxide cathodes have very stable capacities but have lower capacities and power than those with cathodes based on nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) oxides. Issues with thermal stability are better for Lithium Cobalt Oxide cathodes than other nickel-rich chemistries although not significantly.

This makes Lithium Cobalt Oxide batteries susceptible. Lithium Cobalt Oxide decomposition generates oxygen, which then reacts with the organic electrolyte of the cell. This is a safety concern due to the magnitude of this highly exothermic reaction, which can spread to adjacent cells or ignite nearby combustible material. In general, this is seen for many lithium-ion battery cathodes.

  Lithium Manganese Oxide Description  :   Lithium–manganese dioxide cell systems have slowly gained wider application in small appliances, especially automatic cameras. Batteries of this kind have an operating voltage of 2.8–3.2 volts and offer high energy density and relatively low cost for the capability of the cells. Lithium Manganese Oxide with similar transition metal oxide layers separated by a layer containing two lithium cations occupying the available two tetrahedral sites in the lattice rather the one octahedral site. The material is typically made by low voltage lithiation of the parent compound, direct lithiation using liquid ammonia, or via use of an organic lithiating reagent. Stability on cycling has been demonstrated in symmetric cells although due to Mn formation and dissolution cycling degradation is expected. Stabilization of the structure using dopants and substitutions to decrease the amount of reduced manganese cations has been a successful route to extending the cycle life of these lithium rich reduced phases. Lithium Manganese Oxide Description

 Lithium is a Block S, Group 1, Period 2 element with an atomic weight of 6.94. The number of electrons in each of Lithium's shells is [2, 1] and its electron configuration is [He] 2s1. The lithium atom has a radius of 152 pm and a Van der Waals radius of 181 pm. Lithium was discovered by Johann Arvedson in 1817 and first isolated by William Thomas Brande in 1821.

The origin of the name Lithium comes from the Greek wordlithose which means "stone." Lithium is a member of the alkali group of metals. It has the highest specific heat and electrochemical potential of any element on the period table and the lowest density of any elements that are solid at room temperature. 

Compared to other metals, it has one of the lowest boiling points. In its elemental form, lithium is soft enough to cut with a knife its silvery white appearance quickly darkens when exposed to air. Because of its high reactivity, elemental lithium does not occur in nature. Lithium is the key component of lithium-ion battery technology, which is becoming increasingly more prevalent in electronics.

Manganese:

Manganese is a Block D, Group 7, Period 4 element with an atomic weight of 54.938045. The number of electrons in each of Manganese's shells is [2, 8, 13, 2] and its electron configuration is [Ar] 3d5 4s2. The manganese atom has a radius of 127 pm and a Van der Waals radius of 197 pm. Manganese was first discovered by Torbern Olof Bergman in 1770 and first isolated by Johann Gottlieb Gahn in 1774.

In its elemental form, manganese has a silvery metallic appearance. It is a paramagnetic metal that oxidizes easily in addition to being very hard and brittle. Manganese is found as a free element in nature and also in the minerals pyrolusite, braunite, psilomelane, and rhodochrosite. The name Manganese originates from the Latin word mangnes, meaning "magnet."

Aluminum is a Block P, Group 13, Period 3 element with an atomic weight of 26.9815386. It is the third most abundant element in the earth's crust and the most abundant metallic element. Aluminum's name is derived from alumina, the mineral from which Sir Humphrey Davy attempted to refine it from in 1812.
